DWG viewer online: open the drawing, measure it, take the quantities off it
A DWG viewer online is what you need when a drawing arrives and the office copy of AutoCAD is on someone else's machine. Upload the DWG or DXF and it opens in the browser as the file specifies — layers, colours by layer and by object, linetypes, hatch patterns, text and blocks, mirrored blocks sweeping the right way — with zoom, pan and layer toggles. Then measure it: lengths and areas snapping to the drawing's own geometry, in the file's units, and dimensions in the five usual styles.
It is part of IndoCAD inside CivilOS, so the drawing you have opened is also the drawing you can edit, plot to scale with a title block, export as DXF, take quantities off or read as a building for 3D and BIM. What the file says, not what a guess says
A viewer that shows the wrong colour or the wrong scale is worse than no viewer, so this one reads what the file states. Units come from the drawing's own header rather than from the size of the geometry; colours come from the object's own colour index and its layer; hatch patterns are read from the file; a block inserted mirrored is swept the way AutoCAD sweeps it; and the extents fit the drawing rather than one stray object a kilometre away that would otherwise open a 55,000-object plan as a speck. Very large drawings open in a parked mode that draws what is in view and stays responsive.
Measurement that refuses to guess
The take-off is arithmetic on the drawing, not an AI reading of it, and it is honest about what a plan cannot tell it. It will not produce a height it cannot see, it will not count a wall whose ends it cannot verify, and it measures the geometry rather than trusting a text label. Every row of the result says what was measured and on which layer, so the estimator can check it against the drawing before it goes near a bill.
How to start
- Open IndoCAD from the sidebar and choose Open; pick the DWG, DXF, PDF or image.
- Look — zoom, pan, toggle layers; the drawing is shown as the file specifies.
- Measure with the distance and area tools; snaps take you to the real geometry. For a PDF, calibrate a known distance first.
- Take the quantities off to a measurement sheet, or read the drawing as a building.
- Edit, plot or export — DXF, PDF sheets to scale, IFC for BIM.
What CivilOS does not do
- No DWG writing. DWG is read; DXF is written.
- No paper space, layouts or XREF. Model space is shown; a drawing built from external references needs them bound first.
- No 3D solids. 2D geometry, text, hatches and blocks; 3D DWG content is not rendered.
- No AI in the take-off. Deliberately — it measures, and states what it cannot.
- Very large files open in a parked mode that draws less until you zoom in.
Where a browser tool fits
Desktop CAD is the right tool for editing a hundred-sheet set with external references, plotting from layouts and saving back to DWG for a supply chain standardised on it.
Opening the drawing someone sent, checking a dimension, measuring a tender plan, taking the quantities off it, and marking it up on a tablet at site — that is most of what most people do with a DWG, and it does not need a licence. That is what this viewer is for.

Can I open a DWG file online without AutoCAD?

How accurate is the measurement?
As accurate as the drawing: measurements snap to the drawing's own geometry — endpoints, midpoints, intersections, centres — in the file's units, which the viewer reads from the file rather than guessing. For a PDF or image, calibrate one known distance first and the rest follows.
Can it take quantities off the drawing?
Yes, deterministically. The take-off measures the geometry on the drawing — lengths, areas, counts by layer and block — and refuses what the drawing does not contain: it will not invent heights, it will not count a wall it cannot verify, and it measures the drawing rather than the file's metadata. Every row says what it measured.
Can I edit the DWG or save back to DWG?
You can edit it in IndoCAD — draft, dimension, hatch, add blocks, plot to scale with a title block — and export DXF, PDF and plotted sheets. CivilOS reads DWG; it does not write DWG.
Do I need to install anything or create an account?
No installation: CivilOS opens in an ordinary browser on a laptop, tablet or phone and can be installed as an app from the sidebar. A free account is needed to open the engineering modules; it takes a minute and asks for no card.
Draft for checking. Every safety-critical output of CivilOS is a preparation document. Drawings, quantities, rates, programmes and inspections must be verified, and the result signed off, by a licensed professional before they are issued, tendered, built or paid against.
