AI for construction — used where it helps, and never where a number must be exact
AI for construction is most useful at the slow, reading-heavy steps: scaling a PDF drawing into quantities, keying a scanned schedule of rates, looking up what a code says. CivilOS uses AI there — and keeps it out of everything where a figure must be exact. The running bill, the rate build-up, the bar bending schedule's cutting lengths, the lux calculation and the measuring of a DWG are arithmetic you can follow, with no AI in them.
Every AI result is a draft that shows its working: a quantity row carries the dimensions it was read from, an engineering answer carries the clause it relies on. A drawing is read at most once for each purpose and the result is kept, so you do not pay twice for the same reading.
What you can do
| Feature | What it does | Export / status |
|---|---|---|
| AI take-off | PDF, scan or photo of a drawing read into measurement rows with dimensions | Excel |
| Drawing to BOQ | Rows become BOQ items priced on CPWD DSR 2023 | Excel · PDF |
| BBS from drawing | Reinforcement read from a structural drawing into IS 2502 rows | Excel |
| Rates from a scan | A scanned State schedule read into the rate table | — |
| AI engineer | Questions answered with code, edition and clause; attachments read | |
| No AI here | DWG/DXF measuring, bills, rate build-ups, BBS arithmetic, lux, schedules | — |
Draft, then check
An AI reading can misread a dimension, and a construction figure that is wrong costs money. So every AI output here is a draft laid out for checking: the rows with their numbers, the answer with its source. The engineer corrects, then prices. Nothing an AI produced goes into a bill without passing through a human-checked measurement.
Where we refuse to use AI
A bill must equal its own arithmetic; a cutting length must follow IS 2502; a rate must equal its build-up. Asking a model to produce those would be faster to build and impossible to trust. They are computed, tested against known answers, and shown step by step.
How to start
- Upload a drawing in Quantity Survey — PDF, image, DWG or DXF.
- Read it with AI (PDF/image) or measure it exactly (DWG/DXF).
- Check the rows and send them to the BOQ.
- Ask Consult to Engineer anything the drawing raises.
- Bill and report with the AI-free tools.
What CivilOS does not do
- AI output is a draft. A qualified engineer checks it before it is priced, issued or built.
- No AI in bills, rates, BBS arithmetic or lux.
- No design by AI. It does not size members or sign drawings.
- A fair-use allowance applies to AI readings and consultations on each plan.
Where a browser tool fits
General chatbots can talk about construction; they cannot measure your drawing, price it on the DSR and keep the result in your project.
For the estimator, contractor and engineer who want the reading done faster and the numbers still right, AI inside the tools — draft first, check always — is the useful kind.

How is AI used in construction?
Mostly to read documents and answer questions faster: turning a drawing into quantities, a scanned schedule into rates, a question into a referenced answer. In CivilOS that is exactly where AI is used — and nowhere that a number must be exact, such as a bill, a rate build-up or a bar bending schedule's arithmetic.
Is it free?
Yes, to start. Create a free account (no card) and the Free plan opens every module, including the AI features, within a fair-use allowance, with a monthly allowance; prints carry the CivilOS letterhead. Pro, Max and Enterprise Seats plans add more hours and generations and put your own letterhead on every print. The Training Corner, Knowledge Library and Feedback are free without limit.
Can AI make a BOQ from my drawing?
It can make a draft: it reads a PDF or photographed drawing into measurement rows with the dimensions it used, and those rows become BOQ items priced on CPWD DSR 2023. You check the rows — every figure is shown — before pricing. A DWG or DXF is measured exactly without AI.
Can I trust the AI engineer?
As a referenced first answer, yes; as a certificate, no. It is instructed to cite the code, its edition and the clause for every figure, and to say when no Indian standard covers a question. Check the clause before you rely on it.
Which AI does CivilOS use?
Anthropic's Claude models, through Anthropic's API, as listed in the privacy policy. Drawings you ask it to read are sent for that reading only.
Do I need to install anything or create an account?
No installation: CivilOS opens in an ordinary browser on a laptop, tablet or phone and can be installed as an app from the sidebar. A free account is needed to open the engineering modules; it takes a minute and asks for no card.
Draft for checking. Every safety-critical output of CivilOS is a preparation document. Drawings, quantities, rates, programmes and inspections must be verified, and the result signed off, by a licensed professional before they are issued, tendered, built or paid against.
