Famous construction software in India — what each one is for

Ask ten civil engineers which software they use and the same names come back: one for drawing, one for modelling, one for structural design, one for the programme, one for the estimate, and Excel for everything else. This guide lists the well-known ones by job, says plainly what each is for, and where CivilOS fits among them.

Frequently asked questions

Which software is used most in construction in India?
AutoCAD for drawings and Excel for estimates and bills are the most common; Revit for BIM, STAAD.Pro and ETABS for structural analysis, and Primavera or Microsoft Project for planning are widespread in larger firms.

Which software is used for estimation and billing?
Many Indian firms still use Excel with the CPWD or State schedule of rates. CivilOS does BOQs on CPWD DSR 2023, rate analysis, the RA bill in the 13-column form, deviation statements and 10CC in the browser.

Is there one software that does everything?
Not for every job. Structural analysis needs a dedicated analysis program, and large firms run ERPs for accounts and purchase. CivilOS covers the engineering paperwork of a project in one place — drawings, quantities, BOQ, bills, schedule, DPR and quality — and says on each page what it does not do.

What software should a civil engineering student learn?
AutoCAD-style drafting, a BIM tool such as Revit, one structural analysis program, and estimation to IS 1200 with a schedule of rates. IndoCAD and Indo-Revit in CivilOS use the same commands and shortcuts and are free to practise on.
